Wood Options for Deck Flooring

Wood is a popular choice due to its natural beauty, versatility, and durability. However, not all types of wood are created equal and each comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Here are some of the most popular wood options for deck flooring:

  • Pressure-Treated Lumber: This is arguably the most common type of decking material because it’s affordable and widely available. It’s treated with chemicals to resist rot, fungus, and wood-boring bugs. However, it requires regular maintenance including staining and sealing to prevent weather damage.
  • IPE: Ipe is a South American hardwood, also known as Brazillian Walnut. Ipe is the hardest and densest wood in the world with a Janka score that is three and a half times harder than Oak. It is naturally resistant to rot, mold and fungi, insects, abrasion, and severe weather making is the finest choice for outside deck projects with a service life of 75 plus years. It is a chocolatey dark brown color with beautiful grains.
  • Cumaru: Cumaru is a solid alternative to Ipe with an estimated service life of 50 plus years. It possesses the same natural resiliency qualities of Ipe, but at a lower price point. The wood is light to medium brown in color with fine grains.
  • Garapa:Like Cumaru, Garapa is another alternative to Ipe with a service life of 35 plus years. The wood color ranges from a buttery golden brown to medium brown.
  • Tigerwood: Tigerwood gets it name from the distinctive grain with vibrant reddish-brown tones and explicit black stripping that varies in thickness, the wood resembles strips of a tiger. Tigerwood possesses many of the same natural resistant qualities of other South American hardwoods, and  has an expected service life of 30 plus years.
  • Teak: Teak wood is ubiquitous in marine environments especially ship and boat building for it natural resiliency in wet environment. The wood displays a golden color to light brown with natural light color variation. The wood has an expected service life of 25 plus years.
